AP Chemistry

AP Classes Menu

Advanced Placement Chemistry is a second year honors course taken by students who plan to major in biomedical, pharmaceutical or other technical fields. It is comparable to a first year college course both in the topics covered and laboratory experience. Topics covered include kinetics, equilibrium systems, oxidation-reduction reactions, thermodynamics, organic nomenclature and functional groups, electrochemistry, acid-base theories and buffer systems.

AP Chemistry focuses on both theory and labs to teach topics that students must understand to do well on the AP Chemistry exam in May. Students who earn a three or higher score may receive college credit for Freshman Chemistry. Please check with the university you plan to attend for details about their AP test requirements.

WHY TAKE AP CHEMISTRY?

There are several reasons you might want to take AP Chemistry:

  1. AP Chemistry will teach you to think. In AP Chemistry you will be required to think and apply concepts to new situations. This is excellent preparation for the higher levels of  thinking required in college.

  2. You will save both time and money. When you take and pass the national AP Chemistry Exam given in May, you will receive college  credit for the course when you enroll at most  colleges and universities in the United States.

  3. AP Chemistry looks great on your transcript or on a letter of recommendation. Colleges and universities look for students that have distinguished themselves in high school. One of the first things admissions officers ask counselors about a potential candidate for their university is 'did this student take the most challenging courses available?' Taking AP Chemistry is a way of distinguishing yourself in high school.
