AP Biology

Advanced Placement Biology is a second year course taken by students who plan
to major in health -related degrees such as biomedical science, nursing, pharmacy, dentistry or medicine. It is comparable to a first year college course.

AP Biology includes lecture and lab time. Students are expected to learn to set up and perform the majority of labs recommended by the college board. Students have the opportunity to take the AP Exam in May.

Students who earn a three or higher score may receive college credit for Freshman Biology. Please check with the university you plan to attend for details about their AP test requirements.

Why take AP Biology?

There are many reasons to take Advanced Placement classes

  1. AP classes will teach you to think. In AP Biology you will be required to think and apply concepts to new situations. This is excellent preparation for the higher levels of thinking required in college.
  2. If you take and pass the national AP Biology Exam given in May, you may receive college credit for the course when you enroll at most colleges and universities. This can save you and your family both time and money.
  3. You will be better prepared for the college class. Even if you do not get college credit, having taken the course in high school will make it easier to succeed if you take it in college. Freshman biology has traditionally had a reputation as a "weed-out" course at many universities because so many freshmen find it difficult.
  4. AP classes look great on your transcript or on a letter of recommendation. Colleges and universities look for students have challenged themselves in high school. One of the first things admissions officers ask counselors about a potential candidate for their university is 'did this student take the most challenging courses available?' Taking AP Biology is a way of distinguishing yourself in high school.
