APLAC Course Approve

     The syllabus for AP Language & Composition received authorization in June, 2007, and will appear in a ledger published in November, 2007.

      The AP Course Audit was created at the request of secondary school and college members of the College Board who sought a means to:

1. provide teachers and administrators with clear guidelines on curricular and resource requirements that must be in place for AP courses; and

2. help colleges and universities better interpret secondary school courses marked "AP" on students' transcripts.

        Experienced college and university faculty reviewed each course to see that they provided college-level opportunities for students.

 AP Language & Composition at Klein Forest is organized around writers' voices and purposes. Students will read models in college level texts and selections from important authors in both British and American literature. They will learn to write rich prose that shows an understanding of the ways writers and speakers use language to influence the judgments, emotions, actions and ideas of their readers and listeners.

     Most importantly, students will hear the individual voices of notable writers clearly enough to nurture their own growth and development as mature, critical and individual writers and thinkers.

AP Goals
All students will:

1. submit a prose composition (personal essay, short story, argument) and poetry to Klein Forest's student anthology, or other outside publication;

2. Organize assignments into a portfolio to present as a final assessment of the year;

3.Take the AP Language & Composition test in May, 2008. Our MissionTo develop student writers who understand the power of language.

Standardized Test

A Comparison

The AP Language & Composition Test

     The AP test students take in the spring evaluates the students' abilities to master freshman college English.

     In May, 2007, 153 Klein Forest students who took the AP Language & Composition Test competed with students from both private and public schools throughout the United States.

     The 1 hour "timed" multiple choice critical

reading test requires students to analyze and evaluate the rhetorical strategies, purposes and tone of several passages representing nonfiction authors from 1700-present.

     In addition, students write 3 essays in 2 hours that require them to analyze an argument , author's style, and write an essay that documents sources from at least three sources.

     Nationwide, almost 2,00,000 students took the AP Language test last year. Klein Forest students have consistently exceeded the national average. In addition, several KF students have been named as National AP Scholars.
